In order to promote the tourism to the UNESCO World Heritage in Nikko, the two shrines and a temple are lighted up from November 1st to 3rd. The lighting ceremony and concerts were held at the Toushou-gu shrine on Nov. 1st. The five-story pagoda, built in 1818, is one of the building in 42 buildings of Toushou-gu shrine.
It is now best time to see autumnal colors surrounding area of the shrines and temple.

It was unforgettable autumn scene that I was fascinated with the deep blue sky with white cirrus clouds and autumn colored foliage. I'm happy to share with you the image of my beautiful memory when I spent a wonderful day in the highland of Nikko few days ago.

In the photo above, you can see yellow and round shape of leaves that are Katsura's leaves. The leaves give off distinctive sweet scent like cinnamon or Earl Grey tea after leaves turned yellow and fallen to the ground in autumn.

The tree shown in above is Japanese Larch which is native to Japan and one of species of Larch.
It grows wild in the sub-alpine zone of central Honsyuu island of Japan.
In autumn, the trees of Japanese Larch become most beautiful, the needle-like leaves shine in golden colour by the bright sunlight.

At the higher altitude area than the Lake Chuzenji in Nikko, the colours of autumn leaves were at their best.
It being fine, I went hiking to Lake Karikomi & Kirikomi in Nikko yesterday and took some photos.
The image uploaded above was taken at the Lake Karikomi where is most tranquil and mysterious lake in Nikko.
From today, I'll upload the images of autumn colours every day.

I found a lot of acorns on the ground when I took a stroll in my neighbourhood.
So, I hid myself behind a bush tree and was waiting for squirrels that came and appeared for a while, but the squirrel did not appear after all...... I think I was being watched by squirrels on the tree...

This is just a weed called green foxtail.
In Japan, we call it Enokoro-Gusa in Japanese. And another name is Neko-Jarashi that means cat-teaser. Because a cat jumps on this grass and just loves playing with this grass willingly whenever we shake the grass under the cats' nose like this video movie from YouTube ...

Four girls were enjoying punt cruise on the Uzuma river which flows through the central area of Tochigi-shi, Tochigi-Pref, Japan.
The Tochigi-shi is an old merchant town that flourished by water (or canal) transportation between the town and Edo in the Edo period. The town still has many old merchant houses and storehouses built in Edo and Meiji period. Therefore, elegant and old-fashioned streets are still remained, and the City government maintains those old things to promote the tourism. If you have a chance to visit Tokyo SkyTree, I would like to recommend you to extend your trip to Tchigi-shi for sight seeing. You would be arrived at Tochigi only one hour ride by express train of Tobu Nikko Line from Asakusa, or you can see the sights by a stopover on the way to Nikko.

We have a national holiday on October 8th as Health-Sports Day in Japan that is held annually on second Monday of October.　It aims for healthy and active life through sports on that day.
